The United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) is an opportunity for the world to come together and “lay the foundation for a more sustainable future,” says the Assembly’s President, Leila Benali.
Her Excellency Leila Benali, also Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, made the comments ahead of the opening of the sixth session of UNEA, the world’s top decision-making body on the environment.
The Assembly will take place in Nairobi, Kenya, from 26 February to 1 March 2024. Heads of State and more than 5,000 representatives from government, civil society and the private sector are expected to focus on solutions to the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste.
In a video address, Minister Benali said the Assembly offers an opportunity to demonstrate that multilateralism is the bedrock of all global progress.
“History has shown what humanity can achieve when we work together,” she said. “Let us take this opportunity to make real transformative change for people and planet.”
The sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) will take place from 26 February to 1 March 2024 at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. As the world’s highest decision-making body on the environment, UNEA aims to help restore harmony between humanity and nature, improving the lives of the world’s most vulnerable people. UNEA-6 will focus on how multilateralism can help tackle the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste.
