The Eye on Earth Alliance has launched its Data Innovation Showcase competition for bloggers, citizen scientists and designers. Participants stand to win a trip to Abu Dhabi and present their work at the 2015 Eye on Earth Summit, running 6-8 October.
The Blogging Competition challenges writers to create a 750-1000-word inspirational piece on the theme 'A better world through knowledge and information', looking at how data and information can make a difference to ordinary people's lives. The winner of the competition will become the "Official Eye on Earth Summit 2015 Blogger" and report live from the Summit for a global audience.
The Citizen Science Challenge invites citizen scientists to submit projects in three categories, focusing on the use of open data in the fight against food waste, management of forest ecosystems and boosting biodiversity in cities. The scope of the projects depends on the ingenuity of their authors and can include anything from a food donation platform matching excess with need, to a crowdsourced map of a local forest for tree inventory.
Three finalists - one for each category - will get to present their ideas to big data and sustainable development experts at the 2015 Eye on Earth Summit, where the final winner will be selected.
The Data Visualization Challenge invites artists and designers to use open data for creating visualizations that interpret the data on social and economic effects of poor air quality, oceanic warming and natural disasters. Participants are invited to build images, videos, infographics, 3D models, computer simulations, interactive maps and diagrams and other types of visualizations. One winner will be selected for a chance to present the visualization at the Summit.
