In line with previous reports, the objective of the 2016 emission gap report is to provide a recent scientific assessment of the global progress towards emission reductions required to be on track to achieve the long-term goal of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. In particular, the report this year underscores the implications of the enhanced Paris Agreement goal of stabilizing the global average temperature rise to below 2°C and continuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels for Immediate and long-term mitigation actions.
