UNEP and WFP team up to tackle environmental issues in Sudan

Khartoum – UN Environment and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) have signed a letter of agreement to formalize their collaboration on activities supporting the government in assisting vulnerable communities in Sudan.

The necessity of climate analysis and disaster risk reduction is becoming increasing clear in Sudan, as fears grow that delayed and insufficient rainfall caused by El Niño this year has hurt crop development in key production areas of the country and increased the risk of below-average yields.

With WFP’s widespread and professional presence in Sudan and UN Environment’s experience in promoting innovative natural resource management, the two organisations will together address issues of food security and help communities strengthen their environmental management, their ability to mitigate and adapt to climate change, as well as their disaster risk reduction programmes.

“UNP is confident that this agreement with WFP will assist us to mainstream improved environmental management with humanitarian and early recovery activities […] ultimately helping recipient communities build resilience to climate change,” said UN Environment’s Sudan Country Programme Manager, Bradley Smith.
