UN Environment launches second online course on marine litter

Want to learn more about one of our most pressing environmental issues? Then sign up for UN Environment’s second massive open online course. The enrollment deadline has been extended to 8 June.

Marine litter is one the most urgent environmental issues we face, and has become one of the most important topics on the environmental policy agenda. This is clear from the number of non-governmental organizations addressing the problem, the two UN resolutions that have been passed on the issue and the number of nations announcing concrete action to address their own plastic pollution. Kenya’s decision to ban plastic bags, Indonesia‘s vow to reduce its plastic footprint by 70 per cent by 2025, and several other pledges are part of UN Environment’s #CleanSeas campaign.

This campaign, however, is not only about governments launching new policies and targets. It is about everybody doing what they can to stop the wave of plastic entering our oceans. This is why UN Environment is launching a new massive open online course on marine litter. The course aims to inspire students to take action and become leaders in tackling the problem of marine litter.

This is our second such course on the issue. The first took place in 2015 and had almost 7,000 people enrolled. The new course is an update and takes into account feedback from some of those students. It provides two different opportunities for learning: a two-week leadership track offering an overview of the issue; and an eight-week expert track for more in-depth information on microplastics, sea-based sources and governance. A new feature of the course is that, in the expert track, you can choose some of the components and shape your own learning experience.

The course will initially be offered in English, but a Spanish version is in the pipeline. Further on, the leadership track will be available in all six UN languages and Portuguese.

The time to take action on marine litter is now, and the #CleanSeas massive open online course will give you the tools you need to do just that. Click here to enroll, help turn the tide on plastic and become a leader on marine litter!
