UN Day Celebrations in South Sudan

Juba – UN Environment’s office in South Sudan, along with other UN entities, participated in the 71st Commemoration of United Nations Day celebration in Juba. More than 1,000 people gathered at the event including students, faith-based groups, traditional chiefs and other civil society groups. The event was also attended by the representatives of the national, state, and local governments, including the National Minister of Federal Affairs. International guests included representatives of the foreign diplomatic missions in South Sudan.

The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Special Representative of the Secretary-General in South Sudan Ms Ellen Margrethe Loj read-out the UN Secretary General’s message and gave her own Keynote speech.

The UN Secretary-General’s statement for the day highlighted the fact that “this year’s observance of United Nations Day occurs at a time of transition for the world and for the United Nations. Humanity has entered the era of sustainability – with a global commitment to fulfil the great promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.   In this, the UN Organization’s 71st year, we have 17 goals to propel us towards a better future for all on a healthy planet. The world is also moving at long last beyond the mindset which viewed the burning of fossil fuels as the path to prosperity.  At a time of record heat, Member States have embraced the Paris Agreement on climate change in record time.  This landmark measure will enter into force on 4 November. Across that historic threshold lies our best chance for greener, cleaner, low-carbon growth”.

In her own keynote speech Ms Ellen said “as we come together here today, to celebrate UN day, we must be steadfast in our faith that South Sudanese can put aside their differences and unite for peace. The Peace Agreement remains the most credible vehicle to revive the peace process and should be fully implemented in an inclusive manner, for all the people of this country so that they can achieve their dreams and aspirations. Ms Ellen also said that UN is here to support the people of South Sudan; they are your partners for peace, reconciliation, justice, development and so many other efforts that are aimed at improving the lives of ordinary people.”

In his closing speech, the Minister of Federal Affairs expressed the support of the government of the Republic of South Sudan in facilitating UN efforts to deliver development and humanitarian services to the people of South Sudan. There were live interviews with the beneficiaries from members of the South Sudanese communities on UN country team activities.

In addition to UN stalls providing information to the public, activities included traditional dancing, drama and songs by school students from South Sudan. There was also a performance by the UNMISS Rwandan and Japanese Contingent. All the activities were passing message on UN work in South Sudan.

Hundreds of people, including students from the colleges and universities, visited UN Environment’s stall and showed interest in UN Environment’s activities in the country. UN Environment’s work in South Sudan continues to be appreciated.
