UN Environment Chief welcomes EU vote to ratify Paris Agreement

4 October 2016 - UN Environment head Erik Solheim released the following statement in reaction to the European Parliament's vote to ratify the Paris Agreement.

"We are delighted to see the European Parliament vote to ratify the Paris Agreement today. There are real fears for the health of our planet and its peoples, but also a growing sense of hope for a sustainable future. This adds to the hope.

"We now have a critical mass of countries to bring the Paris Agreement into force. But we also have to remember that the Paris Agreement is fundamentally a promise and a call to action. What we need now is for countries to act quickly on those promises if we are to stand any chance of blunting the most serious impacts of climate change.

"UN Environment supports all nations in making this transition towards a greener future".
