Results from E-Waste Kazakhstan project presented to students

Results of the first stage of E-Waste Kazakhstan project were presented at the Al Farabi Kazakh National University in Almaty on 11 December 2017. 
 
As part of the pilot project, six UNESCO associated schools and nineteen universities located in Almaty took part in a competition on collecting e-waste and producing up to 1-minute videos on the issue of e-waste respectively. 
 
Seven tons and 307 kg. of e-waste in total were collected by schools in a 2-months period and delivered to two certified recycling companies, which helped to organize this competition. Schools were awarded with certificates from Almaty city Education Department and pupils were presented with appreciation letters and incentive prizes from UN Environment and UN DPI. 
 
Winners of the video contest were awarded with cash prizes from sponsors (recycling companies and a local electronics equipment shop) as following: 1st place - 300 000 tenge (appr. 900 USD), 2nd place - 200 000 tenge (appr. 600 USD) and 3rd place - 100 000 tenge (appr. 300 USD).
 
In 2018, the working group of E-waste Kazakhstan project plans to cover all schools and universities located in Almaty with a possibility to install permanent e-waste collection points.
