UN ENVIRONMENT AT EXPO 2017: Options and solutions for a clean energy future

An interactive High-Level Dialogue as part of UN Environment Day at Astana EXPO 2017

“OPTIONS AND SOLUTIONS FOR A CLEAN ENERGY FUTURE”

Astana, Kazakhstan, 24 August 2017, Swiss pavilion: UN Environment is joining efforts with the Government of Switzerland and Solar Impulse to promote a cleaner energy future through several engagements at Astana EXPO, including a High-Level Dialogue: “Options and solutions for a clean energy future”. The Dialogue will feature Mr. Erik Solheim, Executive Director of UN Environment and Prof. Bertrand Piccard, the Explorer, Chairman of the Solar Impulse Foundation and UN Environment Goodwill Ambassador.

The event will aim to analyze how smart and sustainable choices in the energy sector are already contributing and could contribute so much more to respond to current challenges of energy security, air pollution and - more generally - sustainable societies.

Tentative programme
15.00 – 15.10 Welcome from Mr Manuel Salchli, Commissioner of the Swiss pavilion at EXPO 2017
15.10 – 16.00 Panel discussion on the options and solutions for a clean energy future. Panel members: Erik Solheim, Bertrand Piccard, the Kazakh Deputy Energy Minister Gani Sadibekov and the CEO of the Renewable Energy Association of Kazakhstan Arman Kashkinbekov. Moderator: Ms. Natalia Alexeeva, Head of Central Asia Office, UN Environment

Questions:
1. What are the health, economic and other benefits of changing current trends and patterns?
2. What does clean energy mean globally and more specifically in the context of Kazakhstan / Central Asia? What should be done to support the transition to cleaner options?
3. How should government and the private sector drive the process? What/whom do we miss in the train?
