Third National Stakeholder Workshop on GE-TOP in Chile

Chile, 11 August 2015 - Fundación Chile and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) hosted the third national stakeholder workshop of its Green Economy and Trade Opportunities Project (GE-TOP) in Chile. The project, supported by the European Commission, seeks to harness trade opportunities in Chile and create new market access through the design of a national standard for the food and wine sector.

The workshop featured 23 representatives from government and the private sector. During the workshop, preliminary findings on two of the project’s main deliverables, namely the design of the standard and an accompanying cost-benefit analysis, where presented. For the design component, aspects considered included the type of initiative (protocol, standard, eco-labels), who should lead the initiative, level of verification, compliance assessment, amongst others.

The cost-benefit analysis (CBA) component assessed potential additional investments, added benefits and avoided costs of such an initiative, taking into consideration economic, social and environmental implications. The workshop included round-table discussions on the different components of the standard design and on the assumptions of the CBA methodology, providing a reality check for the assumptions and perceived benefits of the implementation of a standard.

Inputs gathered at the workshop and an upcoming peer-review process will be incorporated into the final study, which will be published by the end of 2015.
