Green Economy Synthesis Report Launched in Uruguay

Montevideo, 28 November 2014 - The synthesis report of the green economy study for Uruguay was presented in Montevideo to environmental authorities and other key stakeholders. The study has been carried out in the framework of the UNEP-GIZ joint project “Enhancing low-carbon development by greening the economy in cooperation with the Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE)”, funded by German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Buildings (BMUB). The green economy study aims to assess the impacts and complement on-going efforts for greening key sectors, namely, Agriculture, Livestock, Tourism, and Transport by employing a macroeconomic model.

This analytical piece of work found out that the implementation of green economy policies evaluated here would enable the country to continue with its economic growth and social performance while using more efficiently its natural resources and making the country more resilient to the effects of climate change. It is hoped that this first approach to the concept of green economy in Uruguay will serve as a discussion paper that enable policy and decision makers and other national actors, to start a reflection process that encourages the incorporation of the different instruments offered by green economy for national planning.

The National Director of Environment stated in the opening of the event that "This study has opened up valuable opportunities for future work. We have now the challenge of analyzing the results and to continue working for consolidating the development of a "green" model that promotes the virtuous circle of environmental, economic and social benefits."
