Pathways to climate change adaptation: the case of Small Island Developing States

In Youth, education & environment

Climate change involves important challenges and opportunities for humanity. For Small Island Developing States (SIDS), adaptation to climate change is already a reality. UN Environment in collaboration with the University of Geneva and the National Adaptation Planning Global Support Programme, is opening a new Massive On-line Open Course (MOOC) on “Pathways to climate change adaptation: the case of Small Island Developing States".

This 5-week course provides a thorough introduction to the issues surrounding climate change adaptation using a case-study approach. The course begins in January 2015, and requires no specific prior knowledge.

International experts from academia, international and nongovernmental organisations will help you answer questions such as:

  • Why is adaptation to climate change necessary?
  • Why are small islands particularly vulnerable to climate change?
  • How can we analyse climate risks?
  • How can adaptation contribute to sustainable development goals?”

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain why countries will have to adapt to climate change and provide examples of what this could look like;
  • Explain why Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are particularly vulnerable to climate change;
  • Outline how to analyse climate risks and discuss why some countries are more vulnerable than others; and
  • Discuss how adaptation can contribute to sustainable development goals.
