The Environment Education Special Initiative is one of the Eye on Earth foundational Special Initiatives that support and facilitate knowledge transfer through effective environmental and societal data and information sharing, vital for other thematic SIs (Eye on Biodiversity, Eye on Community Sustainability and Resiliency, Eye on Disaster Management, Eye on Oceans & Blue Carbon and Eye on Water Security). The other two foundational SIs are Eye on Access for All and Global Network of Networks.

It is designed as an educational contribution to sustainable development guided by the objectives of the Eye On Earth Summit 2011. It connsolidates and builds on existing environmental education initiatives so as to collectively and effectively contribute towards sustainable development through all the educational arenas.

EoEESI works with a myriad of stakeholders to achieve the ideals of the EoE Community. The stakeholders, 72 at present, are drawn from all the geographical regions: Africa, Asia and Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, North America and West Asia. The stakeholders comprise of environmental educators, policy makers and partner institutions, who are engaged periodically through teleconference calls, held on the second Wednesday of each month to deliberate on the achievements and opportunities of the Special Initative.

The SI also engages with UN Environment’s Global Universities Partnership on Environment for Sustainability (GUPES), a network of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and environmental stakeholders, in championing the promoting the integration of environment and sustainability concerns into teaching, research, community engagement, the management of universities.
