Tajikistan: taking strides in chemicals and waste management

Project Summary

The objective of the project is to enable the Republic of Tajikistan to lay the groundwork for coordinated implementation of the Basel and the Stockholm Conventions and to to strengthen capacity towards becoming a Party to the Rotterdam and the Minamata Conventions. The project will build synergy in the implementation of chemical and waste related international agreements, and therefore strengthening institutional arrangements needed to protect human health and the environment from dangerous chemicals and waste. The overall objectives are to strengthen inter-agency coordination and cooperation, to develop the legislative and regulatory framework, and to improve the implementation, monitoring and reporting of chemicals and waste. It will also improve the efficiency of awareness raising activities and public involvement into environmental decision making.

Project Objectives

The project will undertake the following measures to strengthen the legal and institutional frameworks for sound management of chemicals and waste by:

  • Establishing a national inter-ministerial chemicals management committee;
  • Promoting the development of the institutional framework for accession to the Rotterdam and the Minamata Conventions;
  • Developing a national tool for information exchange on chemicals and waste in relation to the Basel, Rotterdam, Stockholm, and Minamata Conventions, in order to strengthen the implementation of the Stockholm and the Basel Conventions and to support accession to the Minamata and the Rotterdam Conventions;
  • Developing a training programme to strengthen coordination on the implementation of the chemical and waste conventions; and
  • Implementing an outreach and awareness-raising campaign.
