Project Summary

This project aims to support and strengthen national level implementation of the Basel, Rotterdam, Stockholm, and Minamata Conventions and SAICM in Kyrgyzstan. This will be achieved by, among other things, strengthening inter-agency/inter-sectoral coordination, increasing non-governmental stakeholder involvement; and establishing a coordinated national implementation of chemicals and waste related international agreements. It will also focus on training relevant stakeholders on these key issues and the establishment of best practices.

Project Objectives

The project will undertake the following measures:

  • Establishing an operational information exchange mechanism;
  • Developing an action plan to strengthen national chemicals management legal framework and drafted legal amendments with the view to coordinating the implementation of the international agreements;
  • Conducting training workshops for the benefit of BRS and Minamata Convention National Focal Points, SAICM officials and other relevant stockholders on illegal traffic;
  • Developing a national strategy for synergistic action between the BRS and Minamata Conventions including the facilitation of inter-agency national reporting mechanism for the BRS and Minamata Conventions;
  • Developing awareness raising campaign on the sound management of chemicals and waste.
