Project Summary

The Federated State of Micronesia imports chemicals, which are used in various sectors including agriculture, health, and pest control. Responsibility for the life-cycle management of chemicals, regardless of the sector, rests with the environment regulator of the four State Governments. While the National Government is responsible for providing primary regulatory oversight, especially for toxic substances. This project seeks to strengthen the capacity in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) to implement sound chemicals and waste management in accordance with obligations under the Basel and Stockholm Conventions.

Project Objectives

The project will undertake the following measures

  • Develop a national chemicals profile and update the 2015 chemicals inventory for the FSM;
  • Develop a National Chemicals Management Policy and Action Plan based on the findings of the chemical profile and inventory;
  • Strengthen national and state legislative frameworks to provide comprehensive coverage of all chemicals and hazardous waste management matters;
  • Establish a centralised national database to hold chemicals and waste data leading to improve reporting to the Conventions;
  • Strengthen national capacity to effectively implement and enforce the Conventions, and to undertake environmentally sound management of chemicals.
