Strengthening institutional capacity for the sustainable sound management of chemicals and waste throughout cleaner production approach in order to implement the multilateral environmental agreements in the Islamic Republic of Iran oil industry

Project Story

Iran ignites major cleaner oil production project

Project Summary

The I.R. Iran oil industry, being the country’s main industry, consumes a large amount of chemicals and generates considerable waste which pose risk to human health and the environment. Despite many international and regional actions, as well as the ratification of the multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs), namely Stockholm and Basel, there still exist institutional and financial barriers and limited technical capacity, which hinder the sound management of chemicals and wastes. Cleaner Production is an overarching concept for preventative environmental strategies. It aims to prevent pollution from occurring, and manages environmental impacts of the whole production process, not just the impacts of its output. Cleaner Production can improve the effectiveness of MEAs by helping address both environmental and economic problems, encouraging changes towards sustainable production and consumption patterns, and providing a basis for synergies among different MEAs. This project aims to strengthen the country’s institutional capacities for the integrated and sustainable sound management of chemicals and wastes throughout the cleaner production approach for the effective implementation of the chemicals related MEAs.

Project Objectives

The project will undertake the following measures:

  • Organize training and workshops on cleaner production methods and environmental impact assessment, with a close collaboration with the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company;
  • Promote gender-responsive chemicals and waste management through social and economic impact assessments and analysis;
  • Set specific recommendations for chemicals and waste management for Iran’s Oil Industry, which will also help to foster the MEAs;
  • Developing preventative strategies to possible barriers to the sound management of chemicals.
