Transforming Tunisia’s Chemicals and Waste Management

Project Summary

The project aims to strengthen Tunisia’s regulatory and institutional framework in the field of Environmental Sound Management of hazardous wastes and chemicals through the development and implementation of a prevention program with the view to reducing the health and environmental impacts of hazardous waste and chemicals. In addition, measures will be put in place to provide assistance to companies licensed by the Ministry of Local Affairs and Environment for the management of hazardous wastes.

Project Objectives

The project will undertake the following measures to strengthen the legal and institutional frameworks for Sound Management of Chemicals:

  • Conducting an inventory-gap analysis that will identify the needs of licensed companies with respect to improving the handling, storage, transporting, treating and disposing of hazardous wastes including the development of a databases to facilitate the tracking of hazardous waste in Tunisia.
  • Capacity building activities will be carried out to strengthen the capacity of the directorate in charge of risk prevention.
  • Finally, a medium-term strategy for will be developed for the Ministry to raise awareness on hazardous waste among key stakeholders.
