Meeting European Union standards by building institutional capacity in the Republic of Serbia

Project Summary

The project aims to build institutional capacities of the Government of Serbia and strengthen synergies between the Basel, Rotterdam, Stockholm and Minamata Convention at the national level, while improving cooperation between government departments and agencies, industry (recycling sector in particular), and civil society organizations in the field of chemicals management. This will be facilitated by enabling national authorities responsible for safe management of chemicals and wastes to adhere to the requirements of relevant international conventions and EU legislation.

Project Objectives

The project will undertake the following measures to strengthen the legal and institutional frameworks for Sound Management of Chemicals:

  • Development of a relevant and enabling policy environment for synergistic implementation of the BRS and Minamata Conventions, including, the drafting of a set of policy/regulatory documents;
  • Establishment of the National Coordination Mechanism;
  • Capacity building, awareness raising activities and training for improvement of the synergistic approach to chemicals and waste management in Serbia;
  • Establishment of the efficient information system on data collection for national reporting to the BRS Conventions.
