Strengthening legal systems, institutions and data collection infrastructure in Kiribati

Project Story

Kiribati to carry out considerable efforts in sound management of chemicals and waste

Project Summary

This project, builds on the outcomes of previous projects to strengthen Kiribati’s chemicals and waste management by developing its legal systems, institutions and data collection methods. In doing so Kiribati will address its continuing needs by remedying gaps in several priority areas, such as legal and non-regulatory frameworks and providing training to essential stakeholders, including national focal points, the national committee, enforcement workers and school teachers. Kiribati will also address its national information sharing system with the view to strengthening the institutional capacity to undertake regular collection and analysis, initiating pilot studies for data collection, and establishing a central repository for data. This will provide public access to relevant data and enhance the availability of evidence-based information to prompt concrete actions at the national level on chemicals and waste

Project Objectives

The project will undertake the following measures to strengthen the legal and institutional frameworks for Sound Management of Chemicals:

  • Strengthening the legal and non-regulatory framework and enforcement
  • Practical training and participation
  • Establishing updated centralized information sharing on chemicals and waste (chemical import, use, waste generation, and export)
