UN Environment renews partnership with the Africa Network for Animal Welfare (ANAW)
On 19th of August 2019, UN Environment signed an extension of the 7 of March 2018 partnership agreement with the Africa Network for Animal Welfare (ANAW). Building on the excellent cooperation of the previous years, the organizations agreed to join hands in various activities aimed at building the capacity of Major Groups and Stakeholders, including civil society and other key stakeholders in Africa, with a view to enhancing their engagement with UN Environment and UN Environment's governing bodies, and in particular, the United Nations Environment Assembly, to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The agreement was extended for a period of three years, and concrete results include the “Africa Animal Welfare Conference – Action 2020” that will take place in Ghana in September 2020 and the “Africa Animal Welfare Conference – Action 2021” that will take place in 2021 and venue yet to be decided. There will be a global 2022 “Africa Animal Welfare Conference – Action 2022” that the venue is yet to be decided. All the events will provide an opportunity for participating organizations to also discuss their engagement with the United Nations Environment Assembly that takes place in March 2021. The agreement shall also contribute to enhancing the engagement of the civil society during the third Open Ended meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (OECPR) (date TBC) and the 19th Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum in February 2021.
