The Prevention of Marine Litter in the Caribbean Sea (PROMAR) Inception Workshop will convene 14th February - 17th February 2023. PROMAR is financed by the Government of Germany through the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) and is managed through a partnership between German NGO adelphi as Lead Implementer and the UNEP Cartagena Convention Secretariat at Implementing Partner.

Mr. Christopher Corbin, Coordinator of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Caribbean Environmental Programme (CEP) – the UN organisation charged with protecting the Caribbean Sea - will be celebrating the milestone achievements of Jamaica’s own White River Fish Sanctuary (WRFS) at Fifth Anniversary event at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, 8th February, 2023 at the WRFS offices in Ocho Rios, St. Ann.

Day 1 will consist of presentations and discussions at the office of the United Nations Environment Programme Cartagena Convention Secretariat, located at 14-20 Port Royal Street, Kingston. Activities on day 2 will involve a field trip to the parish of St. Ann.

The Global Water Partnership-Caribbean (GWP-C) in collaboration with our Global Environment Facility-funded (GEF) CReW+ project is organising workshops for young persons and the media on Integrated Water and Wastewater Management (IWWM). The index of coastal eutrophication is reported under Sustainable Development Goal 14.1.1.

At this online webinar, the main conclusions and recommendations of the report ‘Stronger together: The role of regional instruments in strengthening global governance of marine plastic pollution’ will be presented. The report is the final product of a research project which analysed the role of regional instruments in combating marine plastic litter and identified linkages of these regional efforts with a new global agreement on marine plastic litter.

This Workshop aims to discuss the development of an AmeriGEO oil spill information system for the Wider Caribbean. In recent years, the Wider Caribbean region has faced challenges from oil spill incidents including a recent event where oil washed up on thousands of kilometers of Brazil’s coastline from an unknown source and multiple spills originating from Trinidad and Tobago. Illegal dumping of oil-contaminated waste by ships operating in the region is also a common occurrence.
