Since its inception in 1972, UN Environment has served as a powerful advocate for the environment. We have spearheaded international efforts to identify emerging environmental issues, made scientific discoveries that impact environmental challenges, and worked alongside governments and other stakeholders to develop policies and programmes that respond to the needs of the planet and its people.
But much is left to be done. With our strengthened mandate from the Rio+20 summit, UN Environment is a powerful platform to promote social, economic and environmental development. We do it by
- Setting the global environment agenda.
- Leading on science-policy-action solutions.
- Building capacity and transferring technology.
- Advocating and raising awareness.
