Since UN Environment was established in 1972, the organization has served as a powerful advocate for the environment. Thanks in large part to our work, most countries now have framework environmental laws, regulations and standards, and public awareness of environmental issues is strong around the world.
But much is left to be done. With our strengthened mandate from the Rio+20 summit, UN Environment is in a powerful position to drive global efforts to pursue an environmental agenda that promotes sustainable economic growth and social well-being. We aim to help the world achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and implement the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.
