Griet, Ingrid Dierckxsens

Africa regional communications and Knowledge Management Specialist

Biography

Griet started out in Vietnam teaching market economy at the Hanoi Foreign Trade University. There she got the idea to write columns for the national Belgian newspaper and to produce stories for the national radio. After Vietnam she joined UNDP In Indonesia as a communications officer reporting on development issues. Then she moved to East Timor doing communications work (newsletter, radio) for the department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO). She also developed a refugee media strategy for IOM/UNHCR to try to get East Timorese refugees back home. After ten years working in Asia, she went to New Zealand for a master’s in creative writing. And from there she went on to Africa, where she first spent over ten years in West Africa with DPKO as the deputy director of the UN radio in the peacekeeping mission in Cote d’Ivoire, working on programs supporting reconciliation and humanitarian issues. And then it was time to see the other side of Africa and get involved in the fight against deforestation, so she moved to East Africa to join UNEP in Nairobi, working for the UN-REDD team.
