Global Processes and Initiatives for a Water-Secure World

Event Overview:

This session aims to highlight and encourage whole-of-government and whole-of-society engagement in key global water-related processes, initiatives, and upcoming decision-making moments such as the UN 2026 Water Conference. Global commitments are increasing, which is positively reinforced by the passing of the UNEA-6 Resolution 13 on “Effective and inclusive solutions for strengthening water policies to achieve sustainable development in the context of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution."

The session will highlight how UNEP and partners are serving its Member States to better restore, protect, monitor and manage their water resources in line with SDG 6 `Clean Water and Sanitation’, and promote actions across the SDGs including through integrated approaches that interlink the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems and Health (WEFE+H) challenges. 

The session aims to achieve the following outcomes: 

1. Increase awareness on the issues to be addressed to achieve global water resilience; 

2. Increase awareness of global programmes, platforms and initiatives and need for alignment across multilateral agreements and frameworks; 

3. Enhance engagement from diverse sectors, including energy, agriculture, and finance, in addressing water-related challenges; 

4. Promote advocacy for effective and inclusive solutions for strengthening water policies to achieve sustainable development .
