Report of the 24th Intergovernmental Meeting of the Coordinating Body on the Seas of East Asia, held in Bali, Indonesia, 19-20 June 2019.

The report includes the resolution of the 24th IGM and its appendices, including the Regional Action Plan on Marine Litter 2019.

At the 24th Intergovernmental Meeting of the Coordinating Body on the Seas of East Asia (COBSEA) in June 2019, participating countries adopted the revised Regional Action Plan on Marine Litter to guide action on marine litter in the East Asian Seas region.

COBSEA Secretariat was requested to prepare guidance for participating countries on the establishment of COBSEA Regional Activity Centres, drawing on the experiences of other Regional Seas programmes and encompassing e.g.

This publication issued by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) funded project: Addressing Marine Plastics – A Systemic Approach. The publication recommends actions that need to be taken by different stakeholders and sectors where plastic waste is substantial and impacts on the environment are high.

The meeting was technical in nature and provided an opportunity to exchange views, discuss experiences and provide technical input in relation to the work of COBSEA. Findings and recommendations arising from the meeting further informed and guided COBSEA’s efforts in the immediate future. 

The aim of this report is to provide an overview, with good examples and practical guidance to enhance the role and contribution of regional seas to the SDG follow-up and review process, in line with UN General Assembly and UNEA resolutions and Global Meetings for the Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans.

The Coordinating Body on the Seas of East Asia (COBSEA) Strategic Directions 2018-2022 were adopted at the Second Extraordinary Intergovernmental Meeting of COBSEA in April 2018.

The Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans adopted the next Regional Seas Strategic Directions (2017-2020) at the 17th Global Meeting of the Regional Seas Conventions and Actions Plans in Istanbul, Türkiye, 20-22 October 2015.
