Biodiversity for Sustainable Development in the Caribbean through Ecosystem Based Management

Biodiversity for Sustainable Development in the Caribbean through Ecosystem Based Management (EBM-DSS) was a 4-year project (2015-2019) implemented under our  Marine Biodiversity Sub-Programme in the Dominican Republic.

The goal of the project was to develop capacities for improving information management systems and testing the application of a new decision-support tool.  An innovative methodology for integrated analysis of  environmental and socioeconomic issues for selected marine ecosystems was applied.  It used a participatory and multi-disciplinary approach in two pilot sites - Puerto Plata and Montecristi.

The resulting decision-support tool can be used by other governments and non-governmental organisations to support decisions on planning and managing the use of coastal resources with an ecosystem-based management (EBM) approach.

Project implementation was possible thanks to the generous contributions from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its Italian Agency for Cooperation and Development (AICS). Transfer of knowledge on EBM and DSS application across the Wider Caribbean took place with the support of the Italian company PROGES Planning and Development Consulting (PROGES).
