First Offshore Protocol Working Group meeting

The Offshore Protocol Working Group held its 1st Meeting in Valletta, Malta on 13-14 June 2013, pursuant to a request by the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention by their Decision (IG.20/12) related to the Action Plan for the implementation of the Offshore Protocol.

More than 40 participants attended the meeting that was organized by REMPEC, including representatives of 14 Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention. They benefited from the experience of well-known regulators and experts from various governments, international organizations and operators.

The meeting was an opportunity for a wide review of the Contracting Parties' obligations under the Offshore Protocol. It also drew up a set of recommendations including the need for the harmonization of the Mediterranean approach with recognized best practices at the European and international levels, the creation of synergies with other related Programmes and Contracting Parties’ Decisions, the involvement of the oil and gas industry and NGOs in future activities, as well as the need for detailed legal and technical information from Mediterranean countries, and the establishment of a regular regional forum.

The 2nd meeting of the Offshore Protocol Working Group will be held in Athens, Greece on 6 and 7 November 2013.
