The consultation process of the Sustainable Consumption and Production Action Plan advancing

As part of a regional consultation process, Focal Points of UNEP/MAP Sustainable Consumption and Production Regional Activity Centre (SCP/RAC) held an extraordinary meeting in Barcelona (Spain) on 25-26 November 2014. The meeting aimed to exchange views on the first draft of the SCP Action Plan for the Mediterranean, provide feedback on its structure and discuss its strategic and operational objectives.

Originally elaborated based on inputs from and consultation of regional stakeholders, the Action plan is articulated around four priority economic sectors: food and agriculture, goods and manufacturing, tourism, and housing and construction.

The consultation phase will conclude with the presentation of the document during the Conference for the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD) review, in February 2015 in Malta. The SCP Action Plan for the Mediterranean will then be presented to the 19th ordinary meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention for adoption.

The process comes in line with decision IG.21/10 of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention during their 18th meeting in 2013. Parties have requested UNEP/MAP Secretariat, with the support of SCP/RAC, to prepare a Mediterranean SCP Action Plan and the corresponding roadmap, addressing the region’s common priorities for sustainable development, including pollution reduction; and identifying SCP actions and tools to effectively implement the obligations under the Barcelona Convention and its Protocols. The process is being carried out within the framework of the EC funded SWITCH-Med Programme.
