Three Italian regions, namely Emilia Romagna, Sardinia and Tuscany, presented their activities foreseen within the framework of the Coastal Area Management Programme (CAMP Italy) project, during the Inception conference held in Alghero, Sardinia on 12 November 2014.
The project was launched at the Inception conference, where its objectives, activities and expected results were presented. These include coordination and dissemination, capacity building, data collection and management, institutional coordination and public participation. The role of the project in the implementation of the Barcelona Convention and its Integrated Coastal Zone Management Protocol (ICZM) was highlighted, with activities in 5 project areas in the regions involved.
"A major goal of the CAMP Italy project is to encourage the implementation of national strategies for integrated coastal zone management, in accordance with the Barcelona Convention ICZM Protocol" said Gaetano Leone, UNEP/MAP Coordinator. "The project is also meant to enhance networking with other CAMP projects and will be a driving force for other coastal regions to join", he added.
The agreement of the CAMP Italy Project was signed by the Italian Ministry of Environment, Land and Sea and UNEP/MAP in March 2014. A 2-year implementation is envisaged until May 2016, in collaboration with UNEP/MAP components PAP/RAC, INFO/RAC, Plan Bleu, RAC/SPA, SCP/RAC and MED POL.
CAMP is a “country driven” programme designed to respond to national, regional and local priorities. It aims at helping the Mediterranean countries in their efforts towards sustainable development, encouraging the implementation of national strategies for integrated coastal zone management and promoting pilot projects in coastal areas of the countries signatory to the Barcelona Convention. The project helps to integrate, standardize, share and implement tools and procedures aimed at adapting the territorial planning, with implications for the management of coastal resources and assets.
