Warsaw, Poland, 28-30 November 2023 - The study tour was part of the country-to-country assistance between Poland and Armenia and organized by UNEP OzonAction’s Montreal Protocol Network for Europe and Central Asia and PROZON The Foundation for Climate Protection in Poland.
The objective of the study tour was the exchange of experience on how to set-up and operate disposal centers for end-of-life appliances containing ozone-depleting substances or hydrofluorocarbons controlled under Montreal Protocol. Site visits were arranged to the following companies:
- Refrigerant processing plant in Mszczonów (PROZON The Foundation for Climate Protection) which is using distillation to separate refrigerant mixtures into their components (reclamation).
- Terra Recycling company in Grodzisk Mazowiecki (Elemental Group) which is operating a modern treatment plant for electrical and electronic waste.
- Przetwarzaj Company in Niepołomice (near Kraków), a smaller plant which also collects and treats electrical and electronic waste.
The study tour allowed the experts of the Armenian Ministry of Environment and the refrigeration associations RAHEA to understand the operation of disposal centers for refrigerators and air-conditioners, which infrastructure and facilities need to be put in place, and which legislation is required to set up such centers.
Armenia will apply the insights gained form the study tour for the preparation of the inventories of banks of unwanted substances to be initiated in January 2024. This project was approved by the 93rd meeting of the Executive Committee for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol.
