Panama City, 2 February 2024 – The UNEP OzonAction Branch marked the successful conclusion of its pivotal workshop titled ‘Enhancing Communication for Effective Global Compliance with the Montreal Protocol and its Kigali Amendment’ held in Panama City on 24-26 January 2024.
This crucial gathering united multi-generational experts, stakeholders, and communicators from across the globe, aiming to fortify communication strategies vital for the successful execution of the Montreal Protocol and its Kigali Amendment. Also, present were Mr. Marco Pinzon, the Montreal Protocol's Regional Coordinator for Latin America, and Ms. Donnalyn Charles, holding the same position for the Caribbean.
The workshop spanned three days, offering deep-dive sessions that covered the spectrum of OzonAction Branch's current communication efforts to the synergy between art and communication. These discussions emphasized the importance of creativity, precision, and strategic alignment with scientific principles in promoting adherence to environmental mandates.
The event was inaugurated by Juan Bello, the Regional Director and Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean, who underscored the critical role of scientific understanding in crafting communications for the Montreal Protocol. Mr. Bello highlighted the indispensable nature of communication in ensuring compliance with this globally endorsed environmental treaty and voiced optimism for actionable recommendations to emerge from the workshop.
Jim Curlin, Head of the OzonAction Branch, pointed out the upcoming challenges, particularly the phase-out of HCFCs by 2030. He stressed the significance of behavioral change within the sector and anticipated that the communication strategy would yield practical tools to achieve the ambitious 2030 goal.
Anne Fenner, Information Manager, and workshop moderator expressed her gratitude and enthusiasm for the overwhelming success and engagement. She remarked, “This workshop has been an essential platform for uniting global experts, communicators, and stakeholders. It has significantly contributed to strengthening our capabilities and strategies for the effective implementation of the Montreal Protocol and its Kigali Amendment.”
The workshop culminated in substantial advancements toward a cohesive global initiative aimed at preserving the ozone layer and counteracting climate change. Through engaging sessions, presentations, and discussions, attendees formulated a progressive work plan to enhance the global communication strategy in support of the Montreal Protocol's objectives.
Key recommendations highlighted the imperative for robust communication support and strategic resource allocation to maintain and assess these efforts effectively, including enhancing support processes for Article 5 countries, allocating budgets for the OzonAction communication team, and maximizing social media and messaging for wider outreach and visibility.
The final communication strategy by OzonAction is anticipated to be released in March 2024.
