LOW EMISSION COOLING IN HIGH AMBIENT TEMPERATURE (HAT) COUNTRIES
(Roundtable)

Addressing the Heat: Innovations and Challenges in Cooling Technologies
As global temperatures rise, the demand for efficient cooling technologies in HAT countries becomes more pressing. In recent decades, the industry has witnessed significant advancements in product and technology efficiencies. These developments are driven by substantial investments in research and development, spurred by stringent regulatory requirements worldwide.

However, the journey is far from complete. Critical discussions among manufacturing sector representatives are shedding light on the current state of technical development, its achievements, and areas where it falls short. The focus is not only on understanding these shortfalls but also on identifying measures to enable more efficient technologies to penetrate and dominate the market. Key challenges include gaps in regulatory frameworks, limited knowledge, and technical skill deficiencies.

In this event, you can see experts from the fields of refrigeration, air conditioning, and ventilation are engaging with policymakers to address pressing questions:

  • To what extent have HAT conditions been factored into product development?
  • What technical areas require more attention, especially considering the upcoming refrigerant transition?
  • What regulatory changes are needed to enhance product efficiencies in HAT countries?
  • How can we accelerate the transition to alternative refrigerants and improve energy efficiency?
  • Does the HVACR/RAC sector require more representation in government structures to emphasize its role in energy efficiency, sustainability, and climate change?

Panelists: Mr Markus Lattner, Managing Director, Eurovent Middle East | Mr Andrea Cavalet, Managing Director, epta Middle East CO2 as a refrigerant in HAT countries |  Mr Gerry Van den Eynde, Area Sales Manager Middle East, BAC Evaporative cooling to reduce refrigerant load | Mr Atta Airayyes, Senior Product Manager, Taqeef Energy conservation with low GWP retrofits | Mr Vilas Bakshi, Managing Director, Aeroseal Emission reductions with duct sealing | Mr Yaqoub Al-Matouq, Head of Ozone Section, EPA Kuwait | Mr. Aditya Narayan Singh, Scientist ‘E’/ Additional Director Ozone Cell, India

YOU CAN'T BE WHAT YOU CAN'T SEE!
What can INWIC do for women in cooling?

Empowering Women in the Cooling Sector: The Role of the International Network of Women in Cooling (INWIC)
Despite the fast expansion of the RACHP sector, women remain significantly underrepresented. This disparity is evident, with only 6% of members in national refrigeration associations being women. The Montreal Protocol stakeholders and partners, through initiatives like the INWIC, are striving to enhance the engagement and representation of women in this sector. Topics to be discussed include:

  • Findings from the Women in Cooling survey.
  • Initiatives in the Middle East to promote women in cooling.
  • Gender mainstreaming activities in Latin America and Africa.
  • Empowering women in the cooling sector.
  • UNEP's global efforts in advancing gender equality.

Speakers: Catarina Marques, London South Bank University and IIR WG Chairperson | Nesen Surmeli-Anac, Guidehouse - Cool Up Programme Yunrui Zhou, UNIDO | Ellen Michel, GIZ | Sonja Wagner, UNEP OzonAction | Colleen Keyworth, INWIC President - recorded statement Ina Colombo, INWIC President -Elect

THE NEED FOR CERTIFICATION: FROM PRODUCTS TO PEOPLE
(Panel discussion)

The Need for Certification: Elevating Standards
The importance of certification extends beyond products to encompass the entire value chain. Efficient products can only achieve their full potential with proper usage, installation, operation, and maintenance. The evolving landscape of new technologies, smart components, and alternative refrigerants necessitates a fresh set of skills and knowledge.

Key discussion points include:

  • The benefits and industry reliance on voluntary product certification.
  • The effectiveness of mandatory continued education for engineers in meeting industry needs.
  • The feasibility and necessity of certifying HVACR technicians.
  • Potential new certification schemes for energy management and efficiency gains, like re-commissioning and building certificates.

Panelists: Mr. Markus Lattner, Managing Director, Eurovent Middle East Ms. Nerissa Deoraj, Director Public Affairs, Systemair | Mr. Vilas Bakshi, Managing Director, Aeroseal | Mr. Ali Alexandre Nour Eddine, Senior Technical Manager, Eurovent Certification Mr. Satish Kumar, Managing Director, AEEE |  Mr. Yaqoub Al-Matouq, Head of Ozone Section, EPA Kuwait | Mr. Hassan Mubarak, Director, Ozone Unit, SCE, Bahrain

ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN THE REFRIGERATION AND AIR CONDITIONING (RAC) SERVICING SECTOR
A missing piece to make Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) work

Energy Efficiency in RAC Servicing: A Critical Component for MEPS Success
The role of Refrigeration, Air-Conditioning, and Heat Pump (RACHP) equipment in society is ever-growing, with energy efficiency being a key factor in ownership and operational costs. While MEPS and energy labels are potent market transformation tools, the ultimate efficiency of equipment relies heavily on proper installation, operation, maintenance, and servicing.

The discussion points include:

  • The significance of MEPS.
  • The Montreal Protocol's role in energy efficiency.
  • The critical need for training service technicians to maintain equipment energy efficiency.
  • Links between MEPs and the Kigali Amendment.

Speakers: Ms. Liazzat Rabbiosi, Ozone Secretariat | Ms. Melanie Slade, IEA | Mr Balaji Natarajan, Multilateral Fund Secretariat | Mr. Philipp Denzinger, GIZ | Dr. Omar Abdelaziz, RTOC Co-Chair and EE Taskforce Chair
