Solid waste management has become one of the main environmental challenges that municipalities in the LAC region must face. It is still evident that the majority of the waste generated is destined for final disposal, with a limited amount of schemes in which the recovery of waste as resources predominates.

The Consultation on sustainable waste management and identification of training needs in Latin America and the Caribbean has been collaboratively crafted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Ibero-American Union of Municipalities (UIM). This effort received support and collaboration from the focal points of the Voluntary Coalition of Governments and Relevant Organizations for the Progressive Closure of Dumpsites in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The primary objective of this report is to present the key findings of the Municipal Consultation conducted in the region. The focus is on evaluating the needs related to capacity-building in municipal waste management and final disposal. Additionally, it seeks to identify trends in this domain, aligning with Action 1 of Objective 3 outlined in the 2021-2022 Work Plan of the Coalition.

Furthermore, the associated training plan will be executed as part of the recently approved 2024-2025 Work Plan.
