Biography

International music star, producer and activist Rocky Dawuni straddles the boundaries between Africa, the Caribbean and the U.S. to create an appealing sound that unites generations and cultures. With an easy-going charisma and reputation as a dedicated champion of social causes, Dawuni’s infectious grooves and dance-inducing anthems have consistently excited fans across the globe. A galvanizing performer, Dawuni has shared the stage with Stevie WonderPeter GabrielBonoJason MrazJanelle Monae and John Legend, among many others. Named one of Africa’s Top 10 global stars by CNN, he has showcased his talent at prestigious venues such as The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. Rocky Dawuni’s sixth album, Branches of the Same Tree, was nominated for a GRAMMY for “Best Reggae Album” for 2016.

Dawuni’s eloquence, cultural diplomacy and successful melding of music and activism have led him to become a passionate spokesperson for various global causes. Rocky was just named a UN Goodwill Ambassador for Africa at a UN Headquarters in Nairobi during the Global Landscapes Forum event where he also performed a large scale concert.

I want to work with communities and help them share their successes and encourage them to keep moving forward to make the future brighter for generations to come.”

As a Regional UN Goodwill Ambassador, Rocky is uniquely positioned to generate considerable support and publicity amongst his audience for UN Environment’s messages and goals through engaging, organizing, and leading activities specifically targeted to his audience. 

United Nations Goodwill ambassadors volunteer their time, talent and passion to raise awareness of United Nations efforts to improve the lives of billions of people everywhere. Rocky Dawuni joins an illustrious line-up of UN Environment Goodwill Ambassadors including Don Cheadle, Gisele Bundchen and Ellie Goulding.

Rocky has previously lent his voice to campaigns with Product (RED), ONE, UNICEF, The Carter Center & the United Nations Foundation. In 2012, Dawuni was appointed the Tourism and Cultural Ambassador of Ghana and World Ambassador for the Musicians Union of Ghana. The same year, UN Foundation’s Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves named him a Global Ambassador, alongside actress Julia Roberts and Chef Jose Andres. In 2013, Rocky performed live in front of UN General Secretary, Ban Ki Moon at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) in Warsaw, Poland. He has performed at the United Nation’s Foundation “Social Good Hub” both at SXSW in Austin, Texas and in NYC during the UN General Assembly. Rocky was also asked to join the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Human Rights headed up by Kerry Kennedy as an Ambassador.
