Supreme is a two-year project (January 2017–December 2018), co-funded by the EC – DG Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE), focusing on two key objectives:
- To support the implementation of Maritime Spatial Planning (Directive 2014/89/EU) in the EU Member States of the Eastern Mediterranean.
- To launch and carry out concrete and cross-border MSP initiatives between these States.
The project involves partners from four Mediterranean countries, namely Croatia, Greece, Italy, and Slovenia, as well as UN Environment/MAP.
The Project is in its second year of implementation and important outcomes have been already achieved, mainly related to the Initial Assessment component, including:
- A basin scale analysis strongly MSP oriented, developed on the basis on country fiches providing information on MSP implementation at national level;
- Recommendations and guidelines to support common understanding and integration of Barcelona Convention principles into MSP activities, focusing on eight key issues relevant for MSP implementation in the Eastern Mediterranean; and
- Development and proposal of a conceptual methodology for transboundary MSP aspects.
MSP implementation, including methods and approaches developed through the Project activities, is currently being tested in the framework of five case studies, across the four Project countries.
