Investment in NMT in Kenya is still low, especially when compared to the proportion of people using walking and cycling as their primary or secondary mode of transport: 47% walking, 1.2% cycling, and 33% transit in Nairobi. The UNEP Share the Road Programme and the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) held a Round Table on Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) on 24 March 2016 in Nairobi.
The Round Table brought together key stakeholders in Kenya from government, development, and UN Agencies to deliberate on how to increase appreciation for the most vulnerable roadway users—pedestrians and cyclists.Among the stakeholders in attendance were representatives from the European Union, Nairobi City County Government (NCCG), UN-Habitat, World Bank’s Nairobi Metropolitan Services Improvement Project (NAMSIP) and the French Embassy to Kenya. The event was facilitated by Michael King, a passionate advocate for better streets who has been on the forefront of mobility, accessibility and sustainability in his career of over 20 years.
