About the Sustainable Development Goals

All countries and stakeholders including UNEP are working in collaboration to implement the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets and 241 indicators are there to measure the progress toward achieving this agenda. UNEP is the custodian agency of 25 of the SDG indicators. Monitoring progress:

As the leading global environmental authority, UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is the Custodian for 25 SDG indicators – across SDG Goal 6, 8, 12, 14, 15 and 17. These indicators cover topics related to resource management and protection of water, marine and terrestrial ecosystems, circular economy, including the sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources; and environmentally sound management of chemicals and waste. The implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals and its 17 SDGs officially began on 1 January 2016, as the UN family, nations, businesses, civil society and many others looked to how they can transform the very way we live.
