Belarus builds infrastructure to effectively manage chemicals

Project Summary

The project aims to create national infrastructure for the implementation of the Rotterdam Convention in the Republic of Belarus as an integral part of the country's efforts to implement sound management of chemicals which includes legislative, information and institutional arrangements.

Project Objectives

The project will undertake the following measures:

  • Launching the project, establishing the project management structure, strengthening inter-sectoral and multi-stakeholders coordination and cooperation to ensure involvement of all relevant stakeholders in the implementation of the project
  • Conducting a situational analysis of the existing infrastructure in the country in regard to the obligations under the Convention and raising awareness about the Convention and current developments in the chemical safety area
  • Creating / strengthening a system for collection and exchange of information necessary for the implementation of the Convention, including the internal and external prior informed consent procedures
  • Strengthening the capacity of all relevant stakeholders, including industry, to ensure the sustainable implementation of the Convention
  • Establishing of a legislative basis enabling the implementation of the Convention
  • Setting an institutional framework enabling the implementation of the Convention on a sustainable manner
