UNEP Executive Director Welcomes President Obama's Clean Power Plan

Nairobi, 4 August 2015 - United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive Director Achim Steiner today released the following statement:

"President Obama's Clean Power Plan is a welcome commitment not only to reduce carbon emissions but to increase use of renewables like wind and energy.

"This is an important signal from the United States in the run-up to the Paris climate talks. President Obama's plan increases the momentum as we approach COP21, and I hope his leadership and that of other leaders and nations will help achieve a lasting and meaningful agreement between all states in December.

"Climate change is the defining issue of our time, and we have a responsibility to act decisively now for the sake of future generations. UNEP stands ready to assist member states in their efforts to tackle the challenge."
