May 2018Ahead of this year’s World Environment Day annually celebrated on June 5th, UN Environment has teamed up with Litterati, a technology firm, to promote change through tracking progress in real time. World Environment Day is the United Nations’ flagship day for promoting worldwide awareness and action for the environment. Over the years, it has grown to become one of the largest global platforms for public outreach, celebrated by millions of people in over 100 countries.

This year’s theme “Beat Plastic Pollution” is a call to action for the world’s citizens to come together to combat one of the great environmental challenges of our time. The theme invites everyone to consider how changes in their everyday lives can help reduce the heavy burden of plastic pollution on our natural places, our wildlife – and our own health. While plastic has many valuable uses, it is apparent that overreliance on single-use or disposable plastic has severe environmental consequences.

“We are honoured to support World Environment Day, we believe through creating evidence based data we can help drive change of regulation, industry and citizen awareness,” said Dick Ayres, Chief Strategy Officer Litterati. Being able to track progress in real time and identifying what objects, materials and brands are being picked up, will provide a broad transparency to the areas where we need to increase focus and drive change.

Litterati’s technology is used to develop behavioural insight, map problem areas, and mitigate future harm. From schools to scientists, environmental organizations, brands and city governments, people are coming together for the greater good to create a litter-free world.

The celebrations around World Environment Day will be broadcasted on social media: Twitter / Facebook. Visit World Environment Day for news, stories and events around World Environment Day and Plastic Pollution.
