Colombian Boy Wins Regional Award in UNEP's International Children's Painting Competition

Panama City, 1 September 2015 - Colombian national Juan David Díaz Manríquez has been named regional winner for Latin America and the Caribbean in the International Children's Painting Competition 2015.

The twenty-fourth edition of the International Children's Painting Competition, for youth aged between 9-14 years old, ran under the slogan"We have the Power!" and aimed to highlight the use of renewable energy and raise awareness about the importance of energy efficiency.

Energy is one of economic today's challenges, as well as an environmental and developmental challenge. Sustainable energy - clean, renewable, efficient, affordable and reliable energy services - is essential for global welfare, and can also lead to a sustainable future for all, with multiple benefits for development, human health and the environment.

Each UNEP Regional Office (Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia-Pacific, West-Asia, North America, Europe and Africa) chooses their regional winners. The selection for the Latin America and the Caribbean winner was coordinated from UNEP Regional Office, based in Panama. The selection process included a selected jury of well-known plastic artists and experts in energy and environment.

The jury decided that the work of the Colombian child represented the theme of this year well, with a powerful aesthetic impact. This year, Latin America and the Caribbean participated with more than 140 works from seven countries of the region.
