In collaboration with its partners, the secretariat of the Nairobi Convention for the Protection, Management and Development of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the Western Indian Ocean Region has developed a new work partnership programme for the period 2018–2022. By decision CP.8/1 of their eighth meeting, in June 2015, the Contracting Parties to the Nairobi Convention requested the secretariat to develop a new work programme for adoption at their ninth meeting.

This Project builds on the previous work completed under the UNDP supported GEF financed Agulhas and Somali Current Large Marine Ecosystems (ASCLME) Project in close collaboration with a number of partners. The ASCLME Project delivered the intended regional TDA and ministerially endorsed SAP for the western Indian Ocean LMEs as well as individual Marine Ecosystem Diagnostic Analyses (MEDAs) for each participating country.

The purpose of this situation analysis is to better understand ecological and social coastal systems in Eastern Africa with a view to identifying key areas and effective strategies through which MFF can contribute to the conservation, restoration and sustainable management of coastal ecosystems as key natural infrastructure which support human wellbeing, resilience and security.

The Conference of Plenipotentiaries was convened by the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in pursuance of decision CP5/4 adopted at the fifth Conference of Parties ICOP5) to the Nairobi Convention For the Protection, Management and Development of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the Eastern African Region held in November 2007, in Johannesburg, South Africa.
