Statement
In the last few years, coastal and marine ecosystems around the world have begun to show signs of degradation due to unsustainable utilization of living and non-living resources, infrastructure development, extractive industries and pollution and other human activities. Such complex threats call for effective ocean governance to coordinate the multiple uses of the ocean and the protection of the marine environment through policy instruments, regional actions and national legal frameworks.

Statement
Nairobi Convention Contracting Parties each appoint a Focal Point in order to help coordinate efforts to protect, manage, and use the Western Indian Ocean at the national level. In practical terms, this means the Focal Point is responsible for liaising between the Nairobi Convention Secretariat, other Contracting Parties, and national bodies; coordinating national-level activities that involve multiple stakeholders and “users” of the oceans; and providing national input into regional-level projects and processes.
