The Nairobi Convention in executing the project on ‘Strategic Action Programme Policy Harmonization and
Institutional Reforms’ (SAPPHIRE), is organizing a Regional Ocean Governance workshop for the Western Indian
Ocean (WIO) region from 04-05 September 2019.

The Ocean Governance workshop will (i) secure and engage key stakeholders for development of the WIO region
ocean governance strategy, (ii) discuss the outline and structure for the WIO Ocean governance strategy,
incorporating the key priority areas, themes and emerging concerns identified during the Special Session on Ocean
Governance at the 11th WIOMSA Symposium held on 05 July 2019 in Mauritius, (iii) align the development of the
WIO ocean governance strategy with the Sustainable Development Goals and targets and with the ongoing global
discussions on Biological Diversity beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ), the Ocean dimension in the Paris
Agreement, the UN Decade for ocean science as well as other global governance initiatives, and the African Union
agenda 2063, and (iv) support and promote effective ocean governance among WIO countries.
