Tide Turners Plastic Challenge

In Youth, education & environment

The world’s largest youth-led movement taking action to reduce plastic waste and lead change in their communities.

The Tide Turners Plastic Challenge - supported and funded by the UK Government’s Department of Environment Food & Rural Affairs, Norway and the Global Environment Facility -  was developed as part of UNEP's Beat Plastic Pollution campaign with a focus on building the capacities of young people to tackle plastic pollution by raising awareness, fostering community engagement, and advocating for policy changes.

This isn't just any challenge – it's a dynamic, fun-filled quest designed to inspire young minds. The Challenge has been developed with a series of levels and activities that not only test and build the skills of young people but also deepen their awareness of crucial environmental issues. Upon completion of the challenge, the participants are awarded with a badge and certificate that serve as a testament to their budding leadership skills and encourage them towards creating impactful change and a brighter future for all.

More Than A Movement On Paper

Since its 2018 launch, Tide Turners has demonstrated the transformative impact of grassroots initiatives against plastic pollution, mobilizing over 800,000 young people, including Scouts, Girl Guides, and youths with disabilities across 50 countries. Its impact is evident in a successful youth-led campaign in the Indian state of Bihar, resulting in a state-wide ban on single-use plastic, and its expansion in Delhi and Tamil Nadu in 2023. The ripples of Tide Turners reached far beyond Indian shores. In November 2023, King Charles III of the United Kingdom witnessed the tireless efforts of the movement in educating young minds, engaging local politicians, and tackling pollution during his royal visit to Kenya. Tide Turners also made waves at the INC-3, with champions delivering a 5-Point Demand advocating for a strong, just, and inclusive policy. The initiative recently garnered international acclaim as a lighthouse project under SDG-14 (Life Below Water), cementing its global impact. Tide Turners is not just fighting plastic pollution; it's rewriting the narrative of youth empowerment and environmental stewardship.
