Clean River, Clean Seas

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is collaborating with partners from different sectors in order to successfully meet the objectives of the Mississippi River Plastic Pollution Initiative. UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is the convener of the initiative. It is also coordinating communications and outreach to generate awareness of the problem and potential solutions with the general public and policymakers. Read more about UNEP’s work on tackling marine debris in North America here.

Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative (MRCTI) is the network of mayors leading the initiative, working closely with mayors’ offices and communities and making the connections to mobilize ‘boots on the ground’ for data collection. University of Georgia provides training to local organizations, schools and volunteers, as well as protocols and guidelines for monitoring litter through visual observations. They are responsible for critical data and brand analytics.
