Why does environment under review matter?

In Environment under review

With the latest advances in Big Data, Earth observation technologies and citizen science, anyone with an internet connection can now access data on the environment in near real time.

This is powerful information that can inform the development of robust environmental policies and help us achieve the goals of the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development.

In our work to keep the environment under review, we aim to bridge the gap between the producers and users of environmental information, empowering policymakers and other stakeholders to act on the latest science. Using our Environment Live platform, people all over the world can track their local levels of air pollution, monitor resource use, and access maps, publications and other resources.

We also produce the Global Environment Outlook, a series of assessments that provide a comprehensive picture of how the environment affects human well-being. The sixth Global Environment Outlook (GEO-6) sets the stage for implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and will help shape national, regional, and global efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

Through our Shared Environmental Information System (SEIS) project, we are building countries’ capacities to conduct environmental reporting and share their environmental data. The project is active in 20 countries in Africa, Asia and Central Asia.
