UN Environment and the Africa Prosecutors Association agreed, at a series of meetings earlier this year, to strengthen the Association’s working group on environmental crime by developing and integrating environmental crime education in prosecutor trainings in Africa.
The jointly designed approach includes the creation of training manuals and curricula on environmental crime prosecution, the formulation and roll-out of standard operating procedures on environmental crime prosecution, and the development and strengthening of the Africa Prosecutors Association Working Group on environmental crime.
The training programme is expected to greatly enhance the capacity of African police and prosecutors to handle environmental crimes rapidly and competently, by improving the cooperation between the police and prosecutorial authorities as well as the quality of the investigation and prosecution.
The action plan for developing and implementing the capacity-building programme on environmental crime prosecution will initially focus on a limited number of pilot countries.
