UN Environment has directly supported seven countries in the Economic Community of West African States region to carry out fuel economy work. To further this work, UN Environment and the Economic Community of West African States Commission with the support of the European Union have partnered to scale this at the regional level. To this end, UN Environment and the environment directorate of the Commission co-organized a meeting on 19-21 December 2018 in Côte d’Ivoire.
The meeting was officially opened by the Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable development of Côte d’Ivoire, François Kouablan on behalf of the Minister, Joseph Seka Seka. He indicated that in pursuit of better national fuel economy, Côte d’Ivoire had developed draft vehicle labelling proposals and was committed to improving national automotive fuel economy.
As a result, a regional roadmap for fuel economy was drawn, with goals for countries to follow for better fuel economy. Two notable targets set were:
- A target average automotive fuel economy of 5 litres per gasoline equivalent per 100 km by 2025 for newly imported passenger cars in the region
- Zero-emission vehicles to account for 30 per cent of newly registered motorcycles by 2030 and 30 per cent of newly registered light-duty vehicles by 2050
Some of the action items agreed on were the development of a regional fuel economy label as part of an awareness campaign and the establishment of a common vehicle data classification, registration and reporting system, among others.
